Musicality

Before Christmas my knowledge of music increased three-fold by the mere opportunity given to me by my boss ~ photocopying orchestra scores.  Yeah, I know, thats unbelievable.  It is not an easy job, because most music is not printed on 8.5 x 11 paper.  Consequently it must be decreased in size or put onto 11 x 17 paper to fit.  Highly complicated process.  Yep.  And then there is the ol' cut-n-paste process required when there's too many pieces of music on one page and you don't want or need it all.  Anyway, I figure just looking at the notes has brought me one step closer to being a musical expert.  Add that to my ability to ring bells, on time, and in rythmn  (except when I miss a beat or a note) I know my musical aptitude is growing.  I can feel it.

Yesterday, I had the little task of ordering music for the school choir.  The notes on the request indicated the music should be 3-parts mixed.  Sounds like a recipe, huh.  Maybe one for disaster, but really, it is not a recipe at all.  Its musical.  Well, I went out to the website, found the music, but also found there are two or three selections on the scores themselves.  And most often, they are marked with SAB or SATB or even SABB.  Dang!  What does that mean????  Well let me tell ya.  This is amazing.  Soprano; Alto; Tenor; Baritone; Bass.  Does that not knock your socks off?   3-part mixed music, is generally needed for young voices, you know they have not developed tenor or base.  So you order the SAB.  That covers what the kids are capable of singing.  I think I might even move from writing blogs to writing music!  Or maybe calling the Vienna Boys Choir.....I wonder if they know all this.

Uh, yeah.
